My inspiration for this piece was Mary Stevenson Cassatt an American painter, printmaker, and well-known pastel artist. Mary Cassatt worked in impressionism along with other artists at the time such as Degas and Pissarro. She created many pastel portraits of friends, relatives, and children in her lifetime. |
Another thing I did before starting the final drawing was make some smaller studies of the face. In these smaller studies I was experimenting on different colored paper called canson paper. In these studies I was practicing using a similar technique to Cassatt on using many overlapping to create optical mixing on the skin. Doing these smaller studies I figured out a few things first that I liked working on darker colored paper for pastel. I liked the darker toned paper more because it brings out more of the light. Though for my final piece I used a paper with a green wash because it was more of a midtone.
